Every year on 19 August, the world honors a noble humanitarian value that transcends borders, geography and differences: humanitarian action that safeguards human dignity and brings hope to communities affected by crises. This year’s World Humanitarian Day comes amid escalating conflicts and disasters worldwide, ascrises related to conflict, energy and food increasingly overlap and compound one another. Food insecurity is rising, humanitarian needs are growing at an unprecedented rate, and humanitarian operations face a significant funding shortfall, while aid workers encounter mounting challenges and risks in carrying out their vital mission.
On this occasion, we proudly reflect on the standing the State of Qatar has achieved in the global humanitarian landscape. Its steadfast approach has made standing alongside people in need and extending a helping hand an enduring national principle. Over recent decades, Qatar’s name has become closely associated with impactful humanitarian and development initiatives in areas affected by crises, disasters and conflict. These efforts have helped alleviate suffering, strengthencommunity resilience and establish Qatar as an inspiring model of humanitarian commitment.
The Father Amir, HH Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, played a pivotal role in consolidating this humanitarian approach. His support for charitable and humanitarian work marked an important chapter in Qatar’s tradition of giving, while his vision strengthened the country’s role in humanitarian assistance and development. HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Amir of the State of Qatar, continues this distinguished legacy, further advancing Qatar’s humanitarian mission and its global role in supporting relief, development and peace. This commitment embodies the values on which the State was founded and reflects its moral responsibility towards humanity.
Building on this proud national legacy, Qatar’s charitable and humanitarian institutions, including Qatar Charity, work in close coordination with the State’s humanitarian efforts, translating this vision into initiatives, programmes and projects that reach people in need around the world.
At Qatar Charity, which has served people wherever they may be for more than four decades, we believe that reaching the most vulnerable and enabling them to live with dignity are at the heart of our humanitarian mission. Our extensive partnerships and long-standing field experience have enabled us to deliver emergency interventions and development programmes in dozens of countries. Yet today’s humanitarian landscape presents mounting challenges to safe and timely access, particularly in conflict zones and complex emergencies. Security and logistical constraints, together with impediments to humanitarian access, too often deprive people of life-saving assistance precisely when they need it most.
Against this backdrop, we emphasize that protecting humanitarian workers and ensuring that assistance reaches those in need are not the responsibility of humanitarian organizations alone. They are a collective duty requiring firm international commitment to humanitarian principles and international humanitarian law.
On this day, Qatar Charity pays tribute to humanitarian workers, including our field teams and local and international partners, who stand on the front lines of humanitarian response and continue their mission despite the risks and hardships they face. These often-unseen heroes embody the true meaning of humanitarian service and deserve every form of support, protection and empowerment, so that assistance can reach those who need it without obstruction. We also express our profound appreciation to donors, partners and philanthropists, whose support is essential to sustaining humanitarian action and enabling it to reach millions of beneficiaries.
World Humanitarian Day is not only an occasion to honor humanitarian efforts; it is also an opportunity to renew our commitment to compassion, solidarity and shared responsibility. In an increasingly turbulent and complex world, humanitarian action remains a bridge of hope. Partnerships among states, humanitarian organizations, donors and philanthropists are more urgent than ever to alleviate suffering, uphold human dignity and help build a more compassionate worldfounded on solidarity for generations to come.
